What does undergraduate research look like?

Undergraduate research in the humanities may take many forms: a critical essay on a cultural object or literary text; an original painting on an historical subject the student has learned about in class; an oral history of an event, an organization or even an individual.

Often emerging from work completed in a university course (e.g., a final paper or project), undergraduate research in the humanities goes beyond the classroom into the archives, the library, or the community itself to start new conversations about the histories, ideas, values and institutions we all share.

Working with their faculty mentors both during the regular academic year and over summer and winter breaks, undergraduate researchers at MU may be integrated into ongoing, grant-funded research projects or included as research assistants, interviewers, choreographers, co-curators or even co-authors on peer-reviewed publications. In the process, they learn valuable skills, including project management, strategic communication and teamwork that will serve them well as they pursue further academic study or begin careers as professionals.
